For Immediate Release: Springfield Police remind citizens to drive with headlights on when using wipers

Springfield Police encourage drivers to turn on their headlights when using windshield wipers. During the recent rounds of stormy weather, members of the police department have observed only about half to three-quarters of drivers complying with state statute regarding headlight usage during active rainstorms.

In the State of Missouri, illuminated headlights are required any time the weather conditions require usage of the motor vehicle’s windshield wipers. This is intended to allow careful and prudent vehicle operation. This issue is also covered by Springfield code, which states vehicle lights will be used during conditions of poor visibility. Again, the purpose of these laws is to encourage safe driving practices on the part of the motoring public.

Remember, any time visibility is reduced, please turn on your headlights so that other drivers can see you. Being visible is an important part of avoiding crashes.
