For Immediate Release: Springfield Police identify subjects found dead from gunshot wounds

Earlier this morning, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Springfield Police went to 2430 S Kickapoo, to check on the residents at the address. A 911 phone call received from the residence had indicated that one person had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that the caller himself would be dead before police arrived.

Police immediately responded to the house and attempted to make contact with the occupants. From the call made to 911, police believed a gun was involved. A perimeter was set up and police continued to attempt contact until the Special Response Team could arrive and make a safe entry into the residence.  At no time were there any signs of movement or struggle inside the house while police were on scene.

Once inside the house, police found William Watson (84 years old) and his wife Jean Watson (76 years old) dead from gunshot wounds. Evidence was found at the scene to indicate the two had possibly committed suicide, however the investigation is ongoing and police have yet to make a final determination regarding the chain of events. It does not appear that a third party was involved and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The Watson family has been notified. There is no other information available for release at this time.
