Smoke Alarms for the Hearing Impaired

Recognizing the need to provide better fire protection for the hearing impaired residents of Springfield the Fire Department applied for and received grants to purchase special smoke alarms. These grants were from the Safe Kids Coalition and Fema.

The smoke alarms are ADA compliant. They have a powerful strobe light that is in addition to the horn that sounds when they detect smoke. They are AC powered with a 9-volt battery backup.

These alarms are free to qualified residents of the City of Springfield that are hearing impaired. The Fire Department will install the smoke alarm at no cost to the resident.

For help in obtaining a smoke alarm call the SMOKE ALARM HOTLINE at 864-1500.

Residential Fire Safety Surveys

Every 15 seconds a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the United States.
A Residential fire occurs every 66 seconds.
There is one civilian fire death every 2 hours.

Fires are likely to start in many places in the home including the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and storage areas such as, the attic, basement, workroom or storeroom. Causes of fire include overheated or overloaded electrical wiring, cigarette ashes, sparks from the fire place, unattended outdoor fires and barbeques, appliances in poor repair and unattended cooking in the kitchen.

One of the best ways to prevent fire in the home is to do a home survey specifically looking for the fire hazards or preparing for emergency measures in case of a fire.

The Springfield Fire Department is now offering a Residential Fire Safety Survey for homeowners FREE upon request. By calling 864-1500 you can make an appointment to have a fire crew come by your home and provide you with a fire safety survey that includes checking your smoke alarms and batteries, identifying kitchen and cooking hazards, fireplace, bedroom, electrical, garage and storage safety, general household fire safety, and fire escape planning. The survey also helps to identify common slip, trip, and fall hazards in the home.

Residential fire safety relies on education. Until we take education seriously, we will continue to have unnecessary fire losses. Call today.
