Thomas J. Carlson was elected as Mayor of Springfield in April
2001 and re-elected in April 2003, April 2005 and April 2007. Previously he
served as Mayor from 1987 to 1993 and served on City Council 1983-1987
and again from 1997-2001. As Mayor, he serves as a member of the
Public Involvement Committee, and as an ex-officio member for
the other four Council standing committees.
Mayor Carlson, a life long Springfield resident, is a businessman,
who’s activities are primarily concentrated in housing development
in out-state Missouri. Prior to real estate development, the Springfield
businessman practiced law for twenty years. He has also worked
as a reporter and editor with a weekly newspaper.
In 1979 he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of
Missouri at Kansas City Law School, where he was a member of the
Law Review. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Arts from George
Washington University, having majored in Journalism and minored
in Chinese.
Mayor Carlson has served the community in several areas, including
as a member of the Springfield/Branson Regional Airport Board
(1994-1997), and an elder for First and Calvary Presbyterian Church.
In 1988 he was named distinguished young lawyer by the Missouri
Bar and is listed in Who’s Who in America.
Mayor Carlson currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors
for Missouri Municipal League, the Board of Directors for the
National League of Cities, Great Southern Bank, and a Member of
the Missouri Commission for Intergovernmental Cooperation, the
Investment Committee for the Community Foundation of the Ozarks,
the Fannie Mae Advisory Board, the Missouri Health & Education
Facility Authority, the Ozarks Trails Council, the Selective Service
Office 009, and the Missouri Bar Association. Mayor Carlson formerly
served on the Board of Governors for Southwest Missouri State
University.
