GENERAL GUIDELINES
-
Call for emergency medical attention.
-
Keep child's neck immobilized as you remove him/her from the water.
-
Restore breathing and circulation first.
-
If child is unconscious or you suspect neck injuries, do not bend or turn neck
while restoring breathing.
-
Give rescue breathing if the child is not breathing but has a pulse. Breathe forcefully
enough to blow air through water in the airway. Do not try to empty water from
child's lungs.

Do not give up. Give CPR if the child does not have a pulse. Continue until child
is revived, until medical help arrives, or until exhaustion stops you.
SYMPTOMS
Look
for one or more of the following:
-
unconsciousness; no pulse
-
no visible or audible breath
-
bluish-colored skin
-
pale lips, tongue, and/or nail bed
IMMEDIATE
TREATMENT
-
Lie child on flat surface, or begin first aid in the water.

Check ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation)
-
If child is not breathing, open airway and start rescue breathing.
-
Check pulse and continue CPR if necessary to restore circulation.
-
When breathing and pulse have been restore, treat for shock.
-
Have child lie down on his/her side to allow water to drain from the mouth.
- Restore child's body
heat by removing wet clothing and covering child with warm blankets.
-
Do not give up if breathing and pulse are not restore. Continue CPR until help
arrives.
